Watch Us Grow
Welcome to the "Watch Us Grow" page at Scribbles Learning Center - a space where you can follow our exciting journey from blueprint to bustling classrooms! I'm Melissa Cordeira, founder of Scribbles Learning Center and a lifelong educator with a passion for early childhood development.
After spending over 20 years as a kindergarten teacher in Easton, Massachusetts, I decided to take my love for nurturing young minds to the next level by creating a childcare center of my own - one rooted in inclusion, creativity, and community. My dream has always been to design a space where children of all abilities and backgrounds can learn and grow together in an environment filled with acceptance, joy, and discovery.
In the photo above, I'm proudly holding the official plans for Scribbles Learning Center, located at 396 Onset Avenue in East Wareham, MA - a project that has been built with heart, purpose, and the belief that early childhood education sets the foundation for a lifelong love of learning.
Scribbles is more than just a childcare center - it's a place where character is nurtured, families are supported, and every child is celebrated for who they are. We offer full-day, year-round care for infants through preschoolers, guided by low teacher-to-child ratios, evidence-based curriculum (including the Experience Curriculum series), and highly trained, passionate educators.
We believe in the power of play, the importance of strong family partnerships, and the magic that happens when children are encouraged to explore the world around them with wonder and confidence.
Thank you for joining us on this journey. We invite you to check back often to see updates, behind-the-scenes photos, and milestones as we build a space where every scribble tells a story.
Let's grow together!
Warmly,
Melissa Cordeira

The Beginning of Our Renovations
Every great story starts with a blank canvas-and this is ours!
We are so excited to share the very first steps in transforming this space into Scribbles Learning Center. Right now, it may look like an empty office building, but with a lot of vision (and plenty of hard work), it will soon be filled with bright colors, joyful laughter, and the energy of curious young learners.
As you can see in these photos, the building still carries the look of its previous life. The open lobby area, teller counters, and back offices are about to take on a brand-new purpose. Over the next few months, these areas will be redesigned into safe, welcoming, and engaging classrooms where children can explore, learn, and grow together.
Before: Offices, counters, and break rooms.
After (coming soon): Infant, toddler, and preschool classrooms, a cozy break space for staff, and play areas filled with creativity and imagination.
Renovating a building into a child care center is no small task-it takes planning, compliance with all state safety and licensing standards, and a lot of love for what the space will become. We're excited to take you along on this journey, showing you the progress as walls come down, new designs go up, and this building blossoms into Scribbles Learning Center.
Stay tuned as we post updates and photos of each stage of the renovation. We can't wait for you to see how far we'll come-and before long, you'll be walking through the doors of a fully licensed, vibrant, and nurturing child care center.
Because at Scribbles, every little step counts... and this is just the beginning!
Raising The Flag at Scribbles
This morning, as we raised the American flag at Scribbles for the very first time, it truly hit me. Seeing those stars and stripes wave above our new center filled me with such gratitude and emotion.
To so many, the flag represents freedom, sacrifice, and unity - and for me, standing here today, it represents something deeply personal as well. It is a reminder of how lucky I am to be here, surrounded by so many cheerleaders who have encouraged me every step of this journey. Scribbles was once just a dream, and now it stands tall, just like that flag, because of the support, love, and belief from my family, friends, and community.
I especially want to thank my husband - my rock, the one who has pushed me forward even on the days I doubted myself. None of this would be possible without his strength and encouragement.
Here at Scribbles, the flag will always remind us not only of the country we love, but also of the importance of what happens inside these walls. Just as the flag stands for hope and possibility, so does play and early childhood education. Every giggle, every scribble, every milestone matters. And it is an honor to create a place where children will grow, learn, and shine under the same values that flag represents.
Our Scribbles Sign Is Up!
We're excited to share a huge milestone in our journey - our temporary Scribbles Learning Center sign is officially up! Every step of our renovation has been meaningful, but seeing our name displayed on the building makes everything feel real.
This sign represents more than just an announcement - it symbolizes our commitment to creating a welcoming place where children can learn, grow, and thrive. It's the first visible sign (literally!) of the dream we've been working so hard to bring to life here in Wareham.
A very special thank you to Gateway Graphics in Wareham for their incredible work and dedication to our project. From design to installation, their professionalism and creativity shine through. Gateway Graphics will also be creating all of our permanent signage, and we are so grateful to have such a talented local partner on this journey.
We can't wait to continue sharing updates as Scribbles Learning Center takes shape. Every milestone - from construction to classrooms to signage - brings us one step closer to welcoming your family into our Scribbles community. 💛

Safety & Community at Scribbles
At Scribbles Learning Center, safety isn't a feature-it's the foundation. Adding clear, visible signage around our building helps protect our children, staff, and families every day. Below is a look at two important signs you'll see on our grounds and what they mean for our community.
24/7 Security Monitoring
We maintain 24-hour video surveillance of our entry points and shared spaces. This layer of protection helps us:
Deter unwanted visitors and unsafe behavior
Support staff awareness and rapid response
Provide documentation for incident review, if ever needed
What families can expect:
Cameras are placed in appropriate locations such as exterior doors and common areas.
Our secure check-in procedures ensure only authorized adults access the building.
Clear visibility and signage remind all visitors that safety is everyone's responsibility.
Our goal is simple: create a calm, predictable environment so children can learn and play with confidence while caregivers feel at ease.
Respectful Campus: No Soliciting
To keep drop-off and pick‑up smooth and distraction‑free, our campus is solicitation‑free. This policy helps us:
Maintain a calm, family‑first environment
Reduce interruptions during arrival and dismissal
Keep focus on children's safety and routines
If you're a local organization hoping to collaborate-wonderful! Please contact us by email rather than visiting unannounced (details below).
We ❤️ Fundraising & Community Partnerships
Scribbles is all about lifting up families and our community. We love partnering on fundraisers, service projects, and local events that support children, schools, and neighborhood causes.

Family‑friendly fundraisers (read‑a‑thons, art shows, gear sales)

Playground Communication Board
At Scribbles Learning Center, we believe that every child deserves a voice-no matter how they communicate. That's why we are thrilled to share that we've applied for a Playground Communication Board Grant through the Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation for Autism. This exciting project will bring an inclusive, language-rich communication board to our outdoor play area, ensuring that every child can express their thoughts, feelings, and needs during play.
What Is a Playground Communication Board?
A communication board is a tool that uses pictures, symbols, and words to help children express themselves. Whether a child is nonverbal, learning English, shy, or still developing their speech skills, these visual supports allow them to participate fully in social play. Words like help, stop, my turn, more, happy, or tired can be pointed to, giving children the power to communicate in the moment.
Why It Matters
Playgrounds are more than just spaces for fun-they're where social skills, cooperation, and friendships bloom. For children who struggle with verbal communication, playtime can sometimes feel isolating or frustrating. This board helps bridge that gap by:
Encouraging inclusion and empathy among peers
Reducing frustration and behavioral challenges
Supporting language development for all children
Allowing teachers and friends to better understand each child's needs
At Scribbles, we see this as an important step toward building an environment where every child feels seen, heard, and understood.
A Step Toward Inclusive Play
Thanks to the incredible work of the Flutie Foundation, communities across the country are transforming their playgrounds into more inclusive spaces. We're proud to join this movement and make our outdoor environment not only fun and engaging, but also accessible for every learner.
If selected, our communication board will be displayed right in our playground area, helping children, teachers, and families communicate together during outdoor adventures. It will also be used as a daily teaching tool to help children learn new vocabulary and social skills through play.
